Spector To Hold August Town Hall Meetings
Throughout the Commonwealth
- U.S. Senator Arlen Specter will visit many regions of Pennsylvania during the U.S. Senate’s August
recess. His visits will include Open House Town Meetings in which constituents are invited to discuss
issues important to the region, the state, and the nation. Senator Specter will address the audience briefly
and devote the remainder of the hour to responding to residents’ questions and concerns.

Assistive Technology – What Is Important to You?
- The Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania recently circulated its new priorities for fiscal years 2009 – 2011 (attached). We are now planning the implementation of these priorities. As we develop our plan to carry out our assistive technology priorities for fiscal year 2009, we would like to know about the assistive technology issues that are important to you.

Bridging the Gap - Disabilities Symposium - September 12, 2008

Autism Sharing and Parenting Meetings - September 13 & 17, 2008

Access to Dental Care for

Disabilities in the
Asian Community - September 17, 2008
- People with developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania often
have difficulty getting access to dental care.
The Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council and
the FISA Foundation have funded a project to explore some
of the reasons why it can be so difficult-and whether some
specific communities may have more difficulty or experience
different barriers than others.
- We are specifically looking for Asian people with disabilities
who were raised in an Asian home. Family members can
also accompany or represent for participants.

Access to Dental Care for

African American Community - September 18, 2008
- People with disabilities in Pennsylvania often have difficulty
getting access to dental care.
The Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council and
the FISA Foundation have funded a project to explore some
of the reasons why it can be so difficult-and whether some
specific communities may have more difficulty or experience
different barriers than others.
- We're holding a series of focus groups and are looking for
adults and/or family members to participate. We are
interested in speaking with representatives from a variety of
developmental disabilities.
- Participants will receive $25. stipend for participating in the
focus group and a light meal.

2008 Building Bridges (Aging/Mental Retardation Cross Systems)Conference - September 23-24, 2008
- The 2008 Building Bridges Conference is designed for people who are part of
the Aging Network and the Mental Retardation System. The Conference will
help participants:
- Identify programs and models of care which are intended to improve the quality
of life of older persons with mental retardation;
- Identify the challenges faced by older persons with mental retardation;
- Recognize alternative programs and models of care;
- Utilize resources and ideas presented to enhance their work with older persons
with mental retardation;
- Cite aspects of physical change with aging.

3rd Annual Parent Appreciation Day - September 27, 2008
- The 3rd Annual Parent Appreciation Day will be held on Saturday,
September 27th from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 440 North Broad Street.
This event lets parents and caregivers know (at the beginning of the
school year) that the District welcomes their participation. It is also
a venue to provide information, via workshops and research tables, about
the many free and low-cost services our office and other community
organizations provide. Participants will be treated to free food
(breakfast and lunch), free prizes, and free giveaways! Make plans to
attend.

Fall 2008 Transition Workshops: Wednesday evenings, Oct. 1 through Nov. 19, 2008
7:00 to 8:30 at Gwynedd Mercy College
- Eight (8) Workshops for parents/caregivers of students with intellectual disabilities.
Parents must be proactive in planning their teenagers' transition from special education to adult life
in the community, taking the lead in developing person-centered, empowered Transition IEP goals
and life plans. These workshops are coordinated by Jennifer Graham, founder of onTRACK
Transition Advisors.
