ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA — Two Allegheny Health care providers severely beat a man with intellectual disabilities with a metal rod, leading his medical care team to remove one of his testicles, state authorities said.
August Young, 24, of North Huntingdon, and Erik Walker, 28, of Clairton, face numerous charges in connection with the incident.
“These defendants were trusted with the safety and well-being of their residents, but instead inflicted severe harm toward a person with intellectual disabilities in their care,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in announcing the case.
It occurred back on Nov. 2, 2021 at Taylor Maleski Home, a facility for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
It’s not clear what led to the attack, but Young and Walker did not report the incident, police said.
The victim’s injuries were not discovered for two days until he complained of pain, according to officials.
Another counselor at the facility discovered the victim had suffered severe bruising, leading to the resident’s hospitalization and surgery to remove one of his testicles, police said.
Young was charged with aggravated assault and abuse of a care-dependent person, while both men were charged with neglect of a care-dependent person, recklessly endangering another person, and conspiracy.
Preliminary hearings are forthcoming.
